Friends of Port Rowing is a nonprofit organization providing student athlete rowers at Schreiber High School an opportunity to be part of a crew team and club, the first ever in Port Washington. Although the idea of a youth rowing club has been talked about for a while, it wasn’t until recently that a determined group of rowers found the resources to make it possible.

The Port Rowing team is currently the largest on Long Island, with an open membership policy that ensures every member an opportunity to compete in regattas. Friends of Port Rowing is working collaboratively with Power Ten Fitness center, under the direction of Steve Panzik, to train the students on ergometers and teach them to row in 54-foot boats fitted with sliding seats and shoes, referred to as Eights. The team is just getting started with two Eights that were donated, along with some of the essential equipment needed to establish the team.
Recently, Port Rowing team launched their boats from Wurzel Cove at the Village Club of Sands Point. The trustees of Sands Point granted Friends of Port Rowing use of the beach area until mid-May to learn water safety, train and practice for their competitions. Mayor Wurzel of the Village of Sands Point remarked, “It’s wonderful to see boating activity at the club that benefits our youth.”
Port Rowing Coaches Steve Panzik, Mitch Tamkin and Bo Hansen are experienced rowers and mentors to the student athletes. Friends of Port Rowing is a membership based organization managed by dedicated volunteers. Donations and sponsorships are appreciated during this start up season.
