Manorhaven Elementary School’s Math Night last Tuesday added up to success as it drew in a large number of people. Teachers and parents of the school generously opened the gymnasium doors after hours to invite students back in for math games, raffle prizes and a bake sale.
Manorhaven Principal, Bonni Cohen said, “The positive energy in the room was incredible. We had a tremendous turnout by both Manorhaven families and teacher volunteers. The event was a perfect opportunity for parents and children to spend time together learning and having fun.”
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano honored Port Washington resident Barbara Romano during a Women’s History Month Celebration held on March 14th. A “champion of second chances,” Barbara Romano has brought her lifelong passion for special education to her volunteer position with Family and Children’s Association’s Vocational Education Program. Each week, she helps prepare students – who have battled addictions, teen pregnancy, poverty and incarceration – to pass the test to receive a high school equivalency diploma.

Guggenheim held it’s 4th annual PARP Pajama night. The goal of PARP is to encourage parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes per day. Students were able to travel from classroom to classroom where they were read various stories by parent volunteers. They also participated in a scavenger hunt related to those stories they listened to. The second week of PARP Guggenheim invited community members to come and read to the students. Participants included State Senator Jack Martins, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney, Weber Principal Marilyn Rodahan, St. Francis Nurse Samantha Euler, Musician Nikki Nevermann from Back to Rock, Manorhaven Trustee Lucretia Steele, Bank Manager Richard Tavares, Letter Carrier Hector Gonzalez, PW Fire Chief Ray Ryan, PW Librarian Keith Klang, Dolphin Bookshop Children’s Room Librarian Debbie Klein as well as many teachers, administrators and staff at Guggenheim.
