As a longtime citizen of Port Washington (over 50 years), I was a little troubled as to how the Thanksgiving Morning Run traffic situation was handled.
On the front page of the Port Washington News dated Thursday, November 26, 2009, there was a “Thanksgiving Morning Traffic Alert” by the police advising residents that the above mentioned race will begin at 8:30 a.m. Alas, there was no ending time.
Depending on what information you received, the ending time varied considerably.
-My family received a voicemail from the police department saying that the race ended at 9:30 a.m.
-A sign across the street from the police department on Port Washington Blvd. said the race ended at 10:30 a.m.
-What was most disconcerting was the information I received from the officer on Harbor Road near the nursing home. This officer said all roads leading out of Port Washington were closed till noon.
It was just 9:45 a.m. and basically I was told that I was hostage in my own town till noon on Thanksgiving Day. I happened to turn around and saw that the traffic had begun moving south on Middle Neck Road.
Considering the amount of traffic on Middle Neck Road and Port Washington Boulevard, the correct information did not get out to the public. Furthermore, Run or no Run, I believe that there should be at least one way out of town at all times.
I hope this situation will be handled in a more orderly fashion next year.
