We write to thank those who opposed the expensive, unsafe, ugly and poorly thought through parking garage proposed to be built at the LIRR station. Thanks to the many who wrote, called and most importantly voted earlier this month and sent a message to our out-of-touch town-elected officials. Now that the town has abandoned this white elephant, perhaps reasonable, cost-effective ways can be developed to address whatever needs exist for additional parking.
Thanks also to Port’s finest and bravest for dispassionately analyzing safety, traffic, emergency egress and other issues and taking reasonable positions despite town officials not pleased with hearing the truth from public servants widely admired in Port. Thanks to the Port police commissioners and police chief and deputy chiefs and to Fire Chief McDonough for their honesty and fortitude.
Finally, a note of disappointment in the actions of our local town representative and some of our leading civic organizations that pushed this albatross and only when public opposition became clear, shifted direction. But at least ultimately the right decision was reached. Lesson here is that speaking out, local activism and voting work.
