It was most disturbing to read the article “Congress Passes FAA Re-Authorization Bill” in the Feb. 16 issue of Port News. What made it so disturbing, in addition to all of the adverse results this decision will have on the Port Washington community, is Senator Chuck Schumer’s abject reversal of his position by casting his “Yes” vote. With his affirmative vote he demonstrated that in reality he spoke on the issue of helicopter noise, pollution, etc., out of both sides of his mouth all this time! For political expediency, he and Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman did some grandstanding a couple of years ago with a photo-op and feature article on the front page of Port News, informing the residents of Port Washington how committed they are to work toward alleviating the unbearable and pervasive noise from these choppers that fly precariously low over the homes of the town’s residents. So much for political rhetoric! With his “Yes” vote for this legislation, which as the Feb. 16 article reported, this bill will result in increased air traffic by both helicopters and commercial airlines, their flight patterns and all of the other environmental problems this increased air traffic will create, Senator Schumer abandoned his constituents by reneging on his commitment to help resolve the problem created by helicopter flights over our homes.
One can only hope that that when Senator Schumer is up for re-election, in case he decides to run again, that the Port Washington community will remember how it was duped into believing the good Senator, and that as a result of his misguided decision, Port Washington will reward him with a permanent furlough from the Senate chamber.
