Letter: Senior Citizen Requests Shade at Pool

(Editor’s note: This letter was sent to Jon Kaiman, supervisor, Town of North Hempstead, and to the Port Washington News for publication.)

I’ve just read an interesting article in today’s (Aug. 15) Newsday regarding the town’s newly renovated Manorhaven swimming pool complex. The article covers some perceived pros and cons and mentions, in part, an opinion from you that criticisms are politically motivated, and from people who don’t like change.

Did you really express that opinion? If so, shame on you!

I’m a senior citizen who has enjoyed purchasing seasonal memberships in the Manorhaven pool for many summers in years past up to, but excluding, 2011. When I visited the pool this year, prior to its official opening, the first thing I observed was lack of covered seating areas. A few people who live close to the pool tell me this sad situation has not changed. So I haven’t used the pool this season and, frankly, miss this activity quite a bit. I feel that sitting in the sun hour after hour is not necessarily in my best interests.

The Newsday article quotes a pool facility director as saying that shade covers are on the way - good news if correct.

I hope that when I visit the Manorhaven pool prior to its opening in 2012 that you have seen fit to provide a reasonable amount of covered seating areas, so that I may once again enjoy this pleasant pool complex.
