Obituary: Ann Hills Plummer
Mother Plummer, the daughter of George S. Hills and Alice Shaw Hills, was born in New Rochelle, on Nov. 28, 1935. She attended Thornton Donovan Primary School and Rye Country Day School and graduated from Vassar College in 1957 and Mercer Theological Seminary in 1990. In the period after graduation from Vassar, she was employed by the Ladies Home Journal and the National Council of Churches.
Obituary: Dr. Charles E. Rogers
Dr. Charles E. Rogers passed away at his Port Washington residence at the age of 88 on July 8, 2009. Chuck, as he was known to his friends, led a privileged life helping members of the community as a physician, mentor, friend and leader.
Born Feb. 23, 1921 in Milwaukee, WI, he received his doctor of medicine from Marquette University. In 1954 he retired after 20 years of service from the US Navy with the rank of captain. The medical career continued with a successful practice in surgical oncology. Dr. Rogers was on the staff of several hospitals and in 1966 joined the medical staff of St. Francis Hospital. While with St. Francis he focused his efforts on improving the quality of health care and established one of the first ambulatory surgery units (day op center) in the county. He served as director of surgery at St. Francis from 1970 until his retirement in 1995.
Chuck was very active in the Port Washington community serving on a variety of boards and councils. He loved the Port Washington area and often remarked how beautiful the sunset was on Manhasset Bay. When he retired from the Navy, he immediately knew this was where he wanted to stay for the rest of his life.
He is survived by Zita, his wife of 44 years; son Charles “Peter”; daughter-in-law Debbie; and two grandchildren, Michelle Porrill and Christopher Rogers.
Arrangements were made by Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, Manhasset. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Fatima RC Church.
Obituary: Florence M. Iacona
Florence M. Iacona, a longtime teacher for the Port Washington School District, passed away at St. Francis Hospital on June 25, 2009. She was a beloved and highly respected first grade teacher, having taught at Main Street School for many years before retiring in 1983. Her teaching career spanned three decades, and prior to teaching in Port, Florence taught first grade in both the East Williston and the Mineola School Districts. Known for her gentle and patient manner, Florence positively affected the lives of numerous students in our community. She was also thoroughly devoted to her family and spent countless hours enjoying and teaching her own grandchildren and attending their school events. Her love of teaching was evident in every aspect of her life. Florence grew up in Port Washington and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peters of Alcantara.
Florence is survived by her husband of almost 54 years, Anthony; her daughters, Lynn Goidell and Diane Peyser; son-in law Mark Goidell; grandchildren, Kimberly, Matthew, Christopher and Lauren; and brother Matthew. She was predeceased by her dear son-in-law, Edward Peyser.
Arrangements were made by Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Following a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peters of Alcantara, Florence was interred at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington.
Obituary: Doris Eschmann
Doris Eschmann, 89, a resident of Ventura, CA, since 1997, formerly of Port Washington, passed away on June 22, 2009 after a long illness. She was the widow of Richard Eschmann. She was born Dorothy Paula Barbara Szigethy on Jan. 17, 1920 in Brooklyn.
A very loving, giving and caring person, she was always known as the life of the party. She is survived by her only son Bruce Jonsson and daughter-in-law Carole Jonsson of Ventura; and five grandchildren, Tiffany Jonsson, Jeffrey Jonsson, Sean (and wife Brandy) Jonsson, Sable and Kristina Jonsson; and one great-granddaughter Lydia Rose Jonsson.
A memorial was held in her remembrance on July 11 at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, Ventura.
Obituary: Genevieve Shorin
Genevieve Shorin passed away unexpectedly on June 5, 2009 after a brief illness. A resident of Port Washington for over 52 years, she was the beloved wife, mother, grandmother and loyal friend to many.
Born in Charleston, WV, on June 9, 1928, she graduated from Linden Hall School in Lititz, PA and Ohio State University. She also attended Teachers College at Columbia University. For the past decade she was a dedicated participant attending Hutton House lectures at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University and was actively involved in scholarship programs designed to assist undergraduate students. She shared those interests with her husband who continues to serve as a member of the university’s board of trustees.
Mrs. Shorin genuinely enjoyed her many relationships with people from all walks of life. Her sense of humor and warmth were well regarded by all those with whom she had contact, endearing herself to neighbors, friends and colleagues.
After 56 years of marriage, she is survived by her husband Edward; her sons, Richard (Andrea) of Ambler, PA, and James (Michelle) of Palo Alto, CA; and six grandchildren.

Obituary: Marion ‘Tess’ Teslik
At 92, Marion “Tess” Teslik was an independent, quick-witted, working woman with a flair for fashion.
Growing up in Jamaica, Queens, Ms. Teslik attended finishing school after her high school days and later enrolled at Fordham University.
She attended three years of college before meeting her husband, Alexander, Jr., while on a train traveling between New York and Connecticut. They later married and Ms. Teslik, an only child, went on to have three children, Alexander, Steven and Melanie.
Obituary: Henry A. Zebroski
Henry A. Zebroski, age 97, a life-long resident of Port Washington, unexpectedly died on June 22, 2009. Henry was predeceased by his wife Mary; brothers, Walter and Sigmund; and sister Gabriella (aka Jenny). He is survived by his children, Henry, Harold (Elynor) and Alexander (Ellen); his grandchildren, Henry (Carla), Irene, Andrew John, Harold Jr., Elin Antonori (Patrick), Katie, Megan and Thomas. He is also survived by many nephews.
During WWII, Henry was employed at Grumman Aircraft in Bethpage as plant supervisor. After the war, he worked in Local Union 66 for Pollock and Wyson Construction until 1977. He later worked another 15 years for the Village of Sands Point as vehicle maintenance supervisor. In 1980, the newspaper, Polish American World, named him as its Citizen of the Year for his seemingly endless support of the Polish American community on Long Island since the end of WWII. Henry also served 14 yeas as mayor and secretary-treasurer of the Town of Port Washington North. As a racing pigeon enthusiast, Henry enjoyed many championship racing seasons. He gave back by serving as secretary, treasurer and president of many racing pigeon clubs. He was very proud of his gardening skills developed while working at the Christian Holmes Sands Point estate. He constantly reminded his children and anyone else who would listen about the tasty hot peppers and tomatoes he grew each year. He shared his aromatic flowers with anyone passing his home.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. A religious service was held June 26 at the funeral home. The cremation was private. Donations in his memory to the PW Police Athletic League, Inc., PO Box 765, Port Washington, NY 11050 would be greatly appreciated.
Obituary: Joseph C. Mayer, M.D.
Joseph C. Mayer, M.D., psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, passed away on June 14, 2009 peacefully in his home in Long Beach. Dr. Mayer was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to Renee G. Mayer, Esq., for 52 years until her death in March, 2008.
Dr. Mayer grew up in Linden, NJ, and attended college and medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1955. He did his residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, NJ, and completed his psychoanalytic training at the Psychoanalytic Association of New York.
Dr. Mayer lived and worked in Port Washington for 43 years. He was a dedicated, hard working psychoanalyst who was committed to the conscientious treatment of his patients. He strongly believed in providing for his family and furthering the education of his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his broad range of intellectual and cultural interests and his sharp sense of humor. He is survived by his four children, Douglas P. Mayer, Esq., Julia L. Mayer, Psy.D., Amy D. Lazar, M.D., and Andrew J. Mayer, Ph.D., their spouses, and 10 grandchildren.

Obituary: Mae R. DeMeo
Mae R. DeMeo passed away on May 28, 2009, at her home in Lantana, FL. Born on Oct. 7, 1909, she was 99 years old. She was the daughter of Antonio and Rosa Giresi and moved to Port Washington from Elizabeth St. in New York City, when she was 3 months old. Her parents, Antonio and Rosa came to America through Ellis Island, when they were 9 and 13 years respectively. They met in New York City and were married in the late 1800s. She was the beloved wife of Mickey DeMeo, also of Port Washington. They were married for 55 years until he predeceased her in 1988. They had resided in Port Washington until 1981, when they moved to North Carolina and Florida. Mae loved to travel and had traveled all over the world. She was an active participant of all areas of her life right up until her peaceful passing.
Affectionately known as Nana, Mae is survived by her daughters, Carole Moores of Oakwood, GA, and Dorothy Martin of Lake Worth, FL; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and her sisters, Josephine Klem of Port Washington and Jane Coffrini of Greenacres, FL. Her brothers, Frank and James, sisters Marie and Annette predeceased her.
A private memorial service was held at St. Peter of Alcantara Church followed by a graveside service at Nassau Knowles Cemetery. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Obituary: Audrey Slavinsky
Audrey Slavinsky (nee Jones), a lifetime resident of Port Washington, died on June 10, 2009. Audrey was predeceased by her husband Matthew. She is survived by her sons, Raymond (Marilyn) and William (Carol); her sister Anita Sheridan; and her grandson David. Audrey was the youngest of 18 children and will be missed by all who knew her. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. The funeral was private.
