Obituary: Catherine C. Klein

Catherine C. Klein passed away Sept. 6, 2009. The firstborn daughter to the late Feliska and Leon Bialobrzeski on Dec. 22, 1913 in Port Washington. She was predeceased by her husband Charles and all of her siblings. Truly loved by her daughters, Carol (Joseph) Dabovich, Charlotte (John) Shotter and Victoria Klein. Proud grandmother of five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Fond sister-in-law of Anthony and Theresa Klein. She was an honored member of the Polish American Cultural Association. Reposing at Austin F. Knowles, Inc. Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church Interment Cemetery of the Holy Rood.

Obituary: James Vigilis

After a long illness, Jim Vigilis passed away at North Shore University Hospital on Sept. 22 at the age of 89. Jim was born on 125th Street in New York City and moved to Port Washington in 1952 where he resided for over 50 years. He owned and operated Ditmars Lumber and Millwork in Jackson Heights, Queens, for several years, a family business his father started in 1926. Jim served in the United States military as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII. He also served as an usher and collector at St. Peter’s Church.

Obituary: Elliot S. Greenspan

Elliot S. Greenspan, 80, of East Norwich, died on Sept. 16, 2009. Husband of the late Renee. Father of Stephen (Stephanie), Michael (Ellyn) and Charles (Susan). Grandfather of Samantha, Lesley, Zachary and Maxwell. Brother of Richard. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home.

Obituary: Alexander J. Brown

Alexander “Al” J. Brown, a resident of Port Washington for 54 years, passed away on Sept. 11, 2009 a the age of 89. He was born in New York City in 1920.

During WWII, he served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. He was a graduate of Evander Childs High School, New York University and he worked at the Third District Court which was in Great Neck.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Anne (nee Emerling); and children, Alex of Cape Cod, MA, Mimi of Cincinnati, OH, and Bruce of Phoenix, AZ; and 6 grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass was celebrated at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment All Saints Church Yard, Great Neck.

Obituary: Karen Majer Regan

Karen Majer Regan, age 64, beloved wife of Peter M. Regan, and resident of Onancock, VA, passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2009. Born in January 1945, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Ruth Majer of Port Washington.

In addition to her husband, Karen is survived by her son David G. Biddle of Silver Spring, MD; her three step-daughters, Katherine Simone of Port Washington, Christine Regan of Westbury and Jennifer Burke of Holliston, MA; her sisters, Stephanie Teff and Andrea Quigley, both of Port Washington; a brother Christopher Majer of Santa Rosa, CA; and seven grandchildren, whom Karen dearly loved.

Obituary: Michael Keith Megdal

Michael Keith Megdal, 24, of Port Washington, died on Sept. 7, 2009. He is survived by his parents, Myles and Vivian and his sister Vicky. Arrangements were made by Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck. Service held on Sept. 9 at the Community Synagogue with Rabbi Ben Sternman officiating. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington.

Obituary: Janice Fillmore Wilsey

Janice Fillmore Wilsey passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 6, 2009. She was 84 years old.

Born September 15, 1924 in Manhattan, Janice attended the Dalton School and Syracuse University, where she met her husband, the late Kenneth C. Wilsey. A resident of Port Washington for 56 years, Janice worked in real estate for over 30 years, most of them at Harding Real Estate. Always impeccably dressed, Janice was known for her love of beautiful clothes, classic movies and all things English. She was an avid traveler who made many trips to all parts of the world.

Obituary: Everett Royce “Kahiliokalani” Kinney

Everett Royce “Kahiliokalani” Kinney, “Sonny” to family and friends, died at home in Hilo, HI, on July 15, 2009. Born in Honolulu, he was a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools and a veteran of WWII, serving in the USMM, where he earned an officers commission.

Relocating to Port Washington, he became active in the local politics and served as mayor of Manorhaven for 13 years before returning to Hawaii. There he earned multiple degrees as a graduate of the University of Hawaii, enabling him to serve native Hawaiians as a health care and family services advocate.

Obituary: Dr. Joseph R. Valinoti Jr.

Dr. Joseph R. Valinoti Jr., of Manhasset and Port Washington, passed away from sudden illness on Aug. 10, 2009 in his daughter’s Westhampton residence at the age of 85. He died peacefully while under the care of his immediate family. Dr. Valinoti was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Virginia Valinoti, in June 2000.

Obituary: Anthony J. Picardi

Anthony J. Picardi passed away on July 20, 2009. A lifelong resident of Port Washington, Anthony was born on May 29, 1924 to Alessandro and Rosina Picardi who originated from Voltara Irpina in Naples, Italy. Anthony attended Main Street School and graduated from Port Washington Senior High School in the Class of 1942. He was drafted into the Army Air Force on Jan. 2, 1943 during WWII. He served in the 15th Air Force 742nd Squadron 455 Bomb Group in Italy until September 1945. Anthony was a proud veteran and a true admirer of all veterans. He enjoyed telling stories to his family and had a true passion for history along with a photographic memory. He also passed on many stories about his father serving in WWI in the NY State Statue of Liberty 77th Division, Army Medical Corp during 1917 and 1918. Alessandro was lucky enough to be in the same barracks with Irving Berlin.
