Obituary: Mark Olds

Mark Olds, a radio executive in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland and St. Louis, died on Oct. 8, 2009 at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, after suffering a stroke on Oct. 4. He was 88 years old and had lived in Port Washington for 41 years.

Mr. Olds had a long career in broadcasting. When he retired in 1982 he was the president of Riverside Broadcasting Company and general manager of the New York radio stations WRVR and WWRL. He had previously served as general manager of WMAQ in Chicago, WINS in New York and KATZ in St. Louis. He also served as program director of WNEW in New York, KYW in Philadelphia and KYW in Cleveland.

Sophie M. Noga, 95, of Derry, NH, died on Oct. 8, 2009 in the Derry Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Derry. Mrs. Noga was born in Oyster Bay on Sept. 14, 1914, daughter of the late Nicholaus and Martha (Zaleska) Zabielski. She had resided in Derry for the past 30 years, formerly living in Port Washington. She was a former member of the Polish Women’s Auxiliary in Port Washington and a member of the Londonderry, NH, Senior Citizens. She was also a communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry.

Malcolm F. Nielson, 96, of Port Washington, died on Oct. 7, 2009. For more than 75 years he was a volunteer in the Great Neck Alert’s Fire Department, serving at various times as chief and member of the Alert Benevolent Association. He was also a member of The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York and Southern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association. Father of Janet Capra, Malcolm S. Nielson, Katherine Grace and Patricia Nielson. Grandfather of 11. Great-grandfather of 10. He was reposed at the Alert Fire Department. Arrangements were entrusted to the Fairchild Funeral Home, Manhasset. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Aloysius RC Church. Interment Flushing Cemetery.

Lucretia M. Harrison, 88 years of age, passed away quietly at her home on Oct. 4, 2009. She was the widow of Paul F. Harrison and of Samuel Bogen. She is survived by her four children, Margaret Ida Havens, Laura Lucretia MacDermott, Paul Theodore Harrison and Charles Frederick Harrison; and by 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Catherine C. Klein passed away Sept. 6, 2009. The firstborn daughter to the late Feliska and Leon Bialobrzeski on Dec. 22, 1913 in Port Washington. She was predeceased by her husband Charles and all of her siblings. Truly loved by her daughters, Carol (Joseph) Dabovich, Charlotte (John) Shotter and Victoria Klein. Proud grandmother of five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Fond sister-in-law of Anthony and Theresa Klein. She was an honored member of the Polish American Cultural Association. Reposing at Austin F. Knowles, Inc. Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church Interment Cemetery of the Holy Rood.
 

Obituary: James Vigilis

After a long illness, Jim Vigilis passed away at North Shore University Hospital on Sept. 22 at the age of 89. Jim was born on 125th Street in New York City and moved to Port Washington in 1952 where he resided for over 50 years. He owned and operated Ditmars Lumber and Millwork in Jackson Heights, Queens, for several years, a family business his father started in 1926. Jim served in the United States military as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII. He also served as an usher and collector at St. Peter’s Church.

Obituary: Alexander J. Brown

Alexander “Al” J. Brown, a resident of Port Washington for 54 years, passed away on Sept. 11, 2009 a the age of 89. He was born in New York City in 1920.

During WWII, he served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. He was a graduate of Evander Childs High School, New York University and he worked at the Third District Court which was in Great Neck.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Anne (nee Emerling); and children, Alex of Cape Cod, MA, Mimi of Cincinnati, OH, and Bruce of Phoenix, AZ; and 6 grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass was celebrated at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment All Saints Church Yard, Great Neck.

Karen Majer Regan, age 64, beloved wife of Peter M. Regan, and resident of Onancock, VA, passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2009. Born in January 1945, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Ruth Majer of Port Washington.

In addition to her husband, Karen is survived by her son David G. Biddle of Silver Spring, MD; her three step-daughters, Katherine Simone of Port Washington, Christine Regan of Westbury and Jennifer Burke of Holliston, MA; her sisters, Stephanie Teff and Andrea Quigley, both of Port Washington; a brother Christopher Majer of Santa Rosa, CA; and seven grandchildren, whom Karen dearly loved.
