Norma Ruth Cohen (nee Boiles) of Port Washington, loving wife of Harvey Cohen for 62 years, died peacefully with her family near on Feb. 19, 2010 following a battle with esophageal cancer. She was an amazing mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by her children: Doug and his partner, Jenifer; Beth and her partner, Dwight; Barry and his wife, Kathy; and her grandchildren, Kyle, Emily, Benjamin, Danny, Teddy and Katie Mae; and her sister Betty and niece, Lynn.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ohio University and Smith School of Social Work, she worked professionally as a clinical social worker for many decades. Norma was a fierce advocate for social justice on the national, state and local levels. She was a founder of the Nassau County chapter of The Interfaith Alliance as well as a member of its national board and was on the board of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and the Hempstead Community Outreach program, among her many other endeavors.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 6 at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset. Donations in her memory may be made to The Interfaith Alliance, 1212 New York Ave., NW, Suite 1250, Washington, D.C. 20005.
