Paul B. Hawthorne, proud longtime resident of Port Washington, died on Feb. 5 at St. Francis Hospital. He is survived by his children David Hawthorne and Erica Garren and his sister Eleanor Talisman. He was a cherished grandfather to Ethan, Eli, Isabel, Tess and Mitchell.
Born in Beverly, Mass, Paul spent most of his life in Port Washington. Participating in Port Singer productions, singing in the Community Synagogue choir and strolling down lower Main Street checking in at the Port Washington Library, Dolphin Book Shop, town dock and antique stores.
Paul spent years working as an investment broker for companies such as Merrill Lynch, Bache and Bear Stearns, and later served as a trusted personal assistant to prominent businessmen.
Paul was known for his letter writing and his storytelling. He loved to write letters and he wrote them to everyone he knew. They were colorful, heartfelt, auspicious and funny. They often included amusing drawings or stamps. Paul was prone to exaggeration. Listeners wouldn’t always know where the reality ended and the tall tale began. He had such sincere reverence for the people he loved that the more he loved them, the more he magnified the stories. Celebrating others accomplishments is what he enjoyed best. He will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Port Washington Public Library.
