Obituary: Richard Joseph Peneski

Richard Joseph Peneski, 75, of Port Washington, passed away on Feb. 14, 2012. Beloved husband of Mary Ann (Salerno) for 50 years. Devoted and loving father of Donna (Sean) Ahern and Richard Jr. (Lee Ann). Adored grandfather of Katie, Sean and Michael. Survived by brother-in-law John E. Salerno (Barbara); sister-in-law May Salerno; sister-in-law Rose Abrams (Ken); and many nieces and nephews. Gone before him were his parents, Mary and John Penesky; brother John Penesky; and brother-in-law Jess Salerno Jr.

Born in Bayside, Queens, and later residing in Port Washington following his marriage in 1961. Mr. Peneski served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959 and the Navy Reserves from 1959 to 1963. He was a 48-year member of the Port Washington Fire Department, Atlantic Hook Ladder Company #1. He was also a member of the Nassau County Firemen’s Association and the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.

Mr. Peneski was a dedicated employee of the Port Washington School District for more than 30 years before his retirement in 1994, where he served as a maintenance foreman. Mr. Peneski was a member of the Polish American Citizens Association, The Manhasset Bay Sportmen’s Club and the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Association.

Mr. Peneski loved to mentor children. He coached PAL baseball for several years and kept in touch with many team members. He looked forward to the annual Manhasset Bay Sportmen’s Club fishing derbies held for children at the Port Washington Town Dock. He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed over 40 years of hunting with his buddies in Cooperstown, NY. He made many friends over the years through these activities.

Above all, Mr. Peneski loved his family. He adored his grandchildren and dedicated his life to them.

Services were held at Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company #1 with Mass of Christian Burial on Feb. 17 at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment at Nassau Knolls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations in Richard’s name be made to the Firematic Company #1, 65 Harbor Rd., Port Washington, NY 11050.
