Gertrude Doyle Salerno, known as “Geret”, formerly of New Canaan, died peacefully at home at The Greens in Wilton, CT, on Jan. 5, 2012. She was 88 years of age.
She was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Philadelphia, PA, to Marie Lawler Doyle and John Thomas Doyle. She attended Little Flower High School in Philadelphia and worked for the Army Quartermaster Corp in Philadelphia before moving to New York to become a buyer for Helena Rubenstein Cosmetics. She met her husband at a church bazaar in Port Washington and they were married for almost 55 years before he passed away in 2010. After her marriage, she first lived in Louisville, KY, while her husband attended law school and then settled in Port Washington.
She moved from Port Washington to New Canaan in 1979 where she lived until retiring to Lexington, VA, in 1991. Geret enjoyed entertaining, cooking for a crowd and, most of all, loved all things related to her family. She was an active volunteer in the Catholic church, teaching religious education, organizing church functions and serving as an usher. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Habitat ReStore in Lexington, VA. She moved back to New Canaan in 2009.
Geret was predeceased by her husband, James Joseph Salerno Jr., as well as three sisters, Marie Doyle, Jane Doyle Donofry and Madelyn Doyle Cramer, and two brothers, Fr. John T. Doyle, OSFS, and Fr. Steven C. Doyle, OFM. She leaves four children and their spouses, Mariclair and Frank Bailey of Ocean Springs, MS, Lisa and Daniel Carlin of New London, NH, Susan and James Salerno of Concord, CA, and Julie and Rowan Taylor of New Canaan; 11 grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Matthew Zittleman, Alexa, Savannah, Rive and Tessa Carlin, and Callie, Mary Lena, Felicity and Pippa Taylor; two great-granddaughters, Angelena Zittleman and Bailey Zittleman; a sister, Margaret Doyle Bouffard of Williamsburg, VA; two brothers, James Doyle of Maryland and Joseph S. Doyle of Sunapee, NH; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was conducted on Jan. 14 at St. Aloysius RC Church in New Canaan. Donations in her memory may be made to Habitat ReStore, 114 Walker St., Lexington, VA 24450. Hoyt Funeral Home, New Canaan, was in charge of arrangements. For online condolences visit www.hoytfuneralhome.com.
