Devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and loyal friend. He was born Sept. 10, 1916 in New Rochelle to Helen Robb Rankin and James Rankin. He moved to Port Washington in 1921 where he was a lifelong resident. He attended Port Washington schools and graduated from Port Washington High School in 1935.
Jim joined the Army in September of 1940 and served for two years in the Signal Corp at France Field on the Atlantic side of the Isthmus of Panama. He returned to the states in 1942 and was assigned to 35th Reconnaissance Squad. He spent time in Mumbai (then Bombay), India, before going to Kunming (headquarters of the 14th Air Force Flying Tigers) and Zhanyi, China. He served there until June of 1945 when he was honorably discharged after five years and five days of service.
In 1947 he joined the Port Washington Police Department, serving as a patrolman, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and finally chief – a position he held from 1965 until 1973 when he retired from the force.
He married Dorothy (Dot) Bernadette Hill on Oct. 19, 1946. They resided on Irma Ave. in Port Washington until 1987 when Dot passed away. He was also predeceased by his sister, Margaret Robertson Norcross, and brother, Robert W. Rankin. He is survived by: a sister, Nancy (Agnes) Rankin Burdick, of Glen Cove; two daughters, Judith Rankin Mulry of Port Washington, and Janet Rankin of Providence, RI; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
All those who knew Jim will miss his sense of humor, his joy of life, his positive attitude and his accepting, kind and loving heart.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Sept. 1 at St. Peter of Alcantara Church. Internment at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the St. Ignatius Jesuit Retreat House, 251 Searingtown Rd., Manhasset, NY 11030.
