Obituary: Michael Bellomo

On Aug. 29, 2011, Michael Bellomo, of Port Washington, lost his four-year battle against leukemia. At the time of his death Michael was surrounded by family and friends at St. Francis Hospital.

Michael was born in the city of Bari, Italy, located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea on Aug. 5, 1942. Born to Trifone and Angela Bellomo, Michael was the youngest of four. He leaves behind his two older brothers, Nick and Filippo and his sister Anna.

In 1955, sponsored by his uncle Rocco, Michael and his father boarded a ship and immigrated to the United States and they settled in the town of Port Washington. It would be five years until he would be able to see his mother again. During that time Michael met the woman who would become his wife, Grace Pucciarelli. Not knowing a word of English, Michael dedicated himself to education. In 1961 he graduated from Schreiber High School at the top of his class. During his high school years he was consistently named Port Washington athlete of the week for soccer and worked as a soda jerk at Joe’s Luncheonette in Manorhaven to help his father.

In the fall of 1961 he was accepted to the NY Merchant Marine Academy of Kings Point. He received a bachelor of science degree with honors. After graduation he was immediately offered and accepted an engineering position with Carrier Corporation. A 31-year career that would define him as a respected technical and financial leader in the NY HVAC market.

On Aug. 7, 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, Grace, and they had three children, Michael, Anthony and Diana. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Michael, Haley, Brianna, Matthew, Lauren, Anthony, Christian and Nicholas.

He lived and devoted his life for the love and the joy of his family.

It was his wish that all donations be made to the school that has done so much to educate his granddaughter, Lauren Beckerle: Little Village School, 750 Hicksville Rd., Seaford, NY 11783. Make donations in the memory of Michael Bellomo, grandfather of Lauren Beckerle. Arrangements have been made on their behalf. Checks can be made out to the Little Village School.
