Obituary: Floyd D. Mackey

Floyd D. Mackey, of Port Washington, was born to Cora Lee and George Mackey of Richmond, VA, in 1923. Graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point Class of 1944, deceased on Jan. 2, 2011. Beloved husband of June. Dear brother Bill predeceased him several years ago as did prior to that his two half-brothers, Eugene and Clarence and their wonderful sister Lucille. He was dear uncle to Lucille’s daughter Elizabeth Weakley and dear brother-in-law of Phoebe Mackey. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Floyd was a true Southern Christian gentleman who loved and served his church, his country and his community of Port Washington which he dearly loved.

After his time in the service, insurance became his field at which point in those earlier years he and his wife June lived in Richmond, VA, Raleigh, NC, Port Washington, Charlotte, NC and then permanently back to Port.

Floyd was a WWII veteran and being a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy he served in all oceans and several areas. He loved and served on several Kings Point Reunion Committees. The last one on the weekend of Oct. 2, 2009 was the special 65th reunion.

In earlier years in Port Washington he was a very active member of the United Methodist Church of Port Washington serving in various capacities – youth work together with June, head usher, choir and finance chairman.

Floyd became well-known as vice president and MC of the John Philip Sousa Memorial Band Shell of which he was a very big part from its earlier inception even before its dedication June 11, 1967. He was a dedicated member and later chaplain of American Legion Post #509 of Port Washington. He also had the honor of being co-Grand Marshal for the 2006 Memorial Day parade – Floyd for the Legion and John Chalker for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In 2009 he was presented with a plaque as Legionnaire of the Year.

Floyd is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. There will be a Memorial Concert at the Sousa Band Shell on “Sousa Night” by Michael Flamhaft’s “Band of Long Island” on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.
