Marie C. Bacik, of Port Washington, lifelong resident of the area, died on Jan. 31, 2011 peacefully at home after 13 years of a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 78. Marie donated her brain for research to help with studies. This was her wish to help prevent Alzheimer’s for future generations.
She was the daughter of the late Walter Wassung and Theresa Basin born on July 7, 1932. Marie is survived by her husband Joseph Bacik of 54 years at home in Port Washington. Also survived by sons, Kevin Bacik of Bayshore, Steven and Maureen Bacik of Scottrun, PA, Joseph and Regina Bacik of Huntington; and daughter Roseann and Guy DiSpigna of New Windsor, NY, and daughter Carol and Andrew Burkard of Bayville. Her grandchildren include Vanessa, Kyle, Nicholas, Jaclyn, Julia, Meagan and Andrew. Also survived by sister Annette Schneider, brother Walter Wassung and recently deceased Tery Bolognesse.
Marie enjoyed her years of volunteer work at St. Francis Hospital and Thrift Shop. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Manhasset Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department Co. #2 for over 40 years. Her hobbies were crocheting blankets for her family members and spending time sitting and enjoying her backyard looking at her husband’s garden. She enjoyed walking around the terrace area having conversations with neighbors and newcomers throughout her years. She loved spending time at her summer place in Hampton Bays with family and friends as well. Heaven has gained a very special angel.
