Long-time resident Harriet Merewitz died Jan. 8, 2010. The former co-owner, with her husband “Mac,” of the Alcove luncheonette and Alcove Caterers was well known by many Port families. The Alcove luncheonette was a popular gathering place for students in the 1950s and Harriet knew most by name.
James Joseph Salerno Jr. of New Canaan, CT, formerly of Port Washington, died March 29, 2010 at Norwalk Hospital of complications related to pneumonia. He was 83 years of age.
Angela D’Amato was born in Bari, Italy, in 1922 and came to America with her family in 1936. She settled in Port Washington in 1948 where she became an active member of the community. Angela was a member of the Sons of Italy and the Italian American Club. She was an assistant manager of the Eunice Dress Shop for over 12 years and was co-owner of D’Amato’s Deli for over 16 years. During this time her hobbies included cooking, crocheting, sewing, crafts, and most of all, spoiling the people she loved. She retired and moved to Cape Coral, FL, in 1980 and from there moved to Fort Pierce, FL.
Alexander “Al” Marra, 52, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2010, after a long illness surrounded by his family and close friends. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Ida and Alexander Marra Jr. and is survived by his beloved wife Connie (Caputo) of 26 years and his cherished children, Alex, Tina and Nick and their family dog “Rusty.”
Ivor was a veteran of WWII seeing active duty in the liberation of Europe. After the war, he went to NYU to get his BA and subsequently became a CPA with firms in New York City. His hobbies included gardening, tennis and singing to name a few. He was a loyal 50-year choir member at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 27 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Port Washington at 10 a.m. with burial and full military honors at Nassau Knolls Cemetery at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Music Fund, 9 Carlton Ave, Port Washington, NY 11050.
Donald Sheldon Jr., son of the late Donald and Eila Sheldon, passed away at home in Stamford, CT, on March 12, 2010.
Born Oct. 20, 1942, Mr. Sheldon grew up in Port Washington. After graduating from Paul D. Schreiber High School, Mr. Sheldon went on to graduate from Brown University. He also served in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Mr. Sheldon spent most of his career in the financial services industry in New York City. Until recently he was a sales associate with Century 21 in Stamford, CT.
Mr. Sheldon is survived by his beloved son and daughter in-law, Donald M. and Lisa Sheldon of Alexandria, VA, and his cherished sister Gail Sheldon of New York City and Port Washington. He will be sorely missed by those who loved him.
Maxine Charles, 89, wife of the late Edwin Charles, formerly of Manhasset, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2010 at Calvary Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Pearl Fox King. She was predeceased by two brothers, Hebert and Lawrence King, and her sister Lorraine King Miller. She is survived by her daughter Heather Alexander and son Michael Charles; two grandchildren, Jamie Alexander Principe and Jeffrey Alexander; and three grandchildren, Mira, Jesse and Jordan.
Maxine Charles was a member of the Sands Point Bath and Tennis Club, the Village Club, Flower Hill Women’s Club and the Sisterhood of the Community Synagogue in Sands Point.
Arrangements were made by Riveside-Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck. Burial private. Shiva was observed at the home of Heather and Stuart Alexander in Stamford, CT, on March 14. Contributions can be made the UA Foundation of New York.
Patricia “Patti” McAvey (nee McMahon), 71, died on March 7, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Thomas R.; a son Thomas Dudley; two grandchildren, Andrew John and Christopher James. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.
Louis Chollet, age 93 of Appleridge at Bethany Village and formerly a longtime resident of Port Washington, passed away Feb. 26, 2010. Lou was born Sept. 16, 1916 in New York City, the son of the late Octave Louis Chollet and Leonie Condou Darracq. He was predeceased by his wife Sylvia S. Chollet in 2008. His surviving family includes his sons, Gary (Bonnie) Chollet of Elmira, NY, and Ray (Barb Wright) Chollet of Lincoln, NE; daughter-in-law Sue Chollet of Peterborough, NH; grandchildren, Chris Chollet, Becky Chollet, Michelle (Marc) Spar, Danielle (Jack Unrue) Chollet, Marc Chollet, Derek (Heather Hostetter) Chollet, Cadi (Mike) Thyne, Porter Chollet, Eric Wright; great-grandchildren, Morgan Spar, Lucas Chollet Hostetter, Sam, Jack and Annie Thyne. In addition to his wife and parents, Lou was also predeceased by his oldest son Richard Chollet, sister Henriette Louise Clementine Gionciotta; half brothers, George and Robert Condou Darracq.
