Joan Borer Delling died on April 28, 2010 at a Boise, ID, memory care facility. She was born June 8, 1926 in Port Washington to Elizabeth Allen Borer and William F Borer. She graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital as a nurse in 1947 with her friend Aline Delling. During a vacation to Aline’s home, she met Hank Delling. They married August 31, 1951 and lived in Philadelphia, PA. They had two daughters, Lee and Carol, both born in Philadelphia.
Anne P. Croce, 84, passed away on April 22, 2010. Born in Staten Island, NY, on March 7, Anne Croce lived most of her life in the New York area. A resident of Roslyn for over 50 years, Mrs. Croce spent most of her adult life as a community activist who was deeply involved in philanthropic endeavors. If there was an event to be organized, a parade to be run, or a charity in need of fundraising, Anne Croce would be there leading the charge. She was personally involved with myriad organizations in the Roslyn area and throughout the Town of North Hempstead, including: the American Heart Association; Roslyn Little League; the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program; the Village of East Hills; the Ronald McDonald House; St. Mary’s CYO and so many others.
Concetta Pucciarelli (nee Scarangiello), age 93, of Port Washington, died on April 21, 2010. Concetta was predeceased by her husband Anthony. She is survived by her children, Antoinette Zawolik, Christina Sova, Grace Bellomo, Anthony “Lad” and John; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and many many nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements were handled by Austin F. Knowles, Inc. Funeral Home, Port Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 23 at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Entombment followed at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
Gerald Simon, an actor whose work in scores of television commercials made him a familiar face to millions, died on Friday. He was 71. His wife, Elizabeth, said Mr. Simon died at a Long Island hospital after a prolonged illness.
Mildred Formisano, a Manorhaven resident for more than 50 years, died on April 10, 2010 at the age of 92. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph of 74 years and her son Joseph. She is survived by her children Annmarie Benzinger (Georg), Theresa Colucci (Bruno), Connie Jester (Thomas), Midge Guarino (Vito), Margie Dobbin (Raymond) and Pat Gonzales. Grandmother of 22 and great-grandmother of 47.
Pierre Raymond Warny, of Port Washington, died on April 9, 2010 at the age of 94. He was a WWII veteran serving with the US Army in the European Theatre. He was co-founder of the Toy Balloon Corp. in New York City with his sister the late Helen Weihs. Husband of 68 years to Irene. Father of Joellen (Bill) Ahmuty and Pierre Raymond (Nancy) Warny Jr. Grandfather of Elizabeth (Jim) Silveria, William R. (Monica) Ahmuty, Michael (Kaci) Ahmuty, Peter Warny and great-grandfather of Will, Chris and Jack Silveria, Will and Caitlin Ahmuty and Riley and Cassidy Ahmuty. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment St. Charles Cemetery. Ruth R. Olson, 88, of Venice, FL, formerly of Ridgewood, NJ, passed away March 27, 2010 at her home. Ruth was a loving mother and grandmother. Prior and subsequent to raising her family, she worked as an executive administrative assistant. She is survived by her children, John Olson of New York, NY, Ginger Sheets of Novato,CA, and Steven Olson of Ridgewood, NJ; and grandchildren, Kyle and Claire Olson, Kristen and Andrew Sheets and Tara, Gregory and Maeve Olson. She is also survived by a sister Alice Campbell of Hillsdale, NJ.
Edward “Eddie” Ochenkoski, 76, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away March 9, 2010.
Eddie was born in Port Washington on May 25, 1933. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara Pollack and is survived by his sons, Gary (Michelle) Ochenkoski of Phoenix, AZ, and Glen Ochenkoski of Burbank, CA, along with grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah.
Ellen Parker, professor emerita of Speech-Language-Hearing Services at Hofstra University, died Feb. 25, 2010 after a brief illness. She had just celebrated her 75th birthday and had lived in Port Washington for years.
