Jean Kostrej, of Manorhaven, died on May 20, 2010 after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife Carolina Krupka; his siblings, Suzanne Decarlo and George Kostrej; and many nieces and nephews who loved him. Funeral arrangements were handled by Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home.
Alexander Palm, born in Tallinn, Estonia on Dec. 2, 1915, passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, VT. He and his wife Edith resided in Manorhaven for 46 years before retiring to Vermont. Mr. Palm was employed by Helena Rubinstein Cosmetics Manufacturing in New York. He was very fond of animals and especially enjoyed cats.
Elvira Intintoli D’Amelio, born June 7, 1926 in Torella di Lombardi, Italy, died on May 14, 2010. Her love for family, especially children, gave her the loving name, “zizi” (“auntie” in Italian) to dozens of nieces and nephews, blood-related and otherwise.
Harlan S. Wootton, 90, of Heritage Village, Southbury, died on May 22, 2010 at his home. He was the widower of Dorothy Wootton.
Mr. Wootton was born Sept. 10, 1919, in Brooklyn, son of the late Harlan and Ethel Wootton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and retired as vice president of sales for Dolly Madison Co. He was a long-time resident of Heritage Village and founder of the Manhasset Social Club.
Hugh McGuigan died peacefully in his home on St. Pete Beach in Florida, which he shared with his wife Nancy. Hugh is survived by his mother Iola; son George McGuigan; daughter Debra Seabers and her children, Abigail Seabers, Adam Seabers and Katherine Lehman and her daughter Trinity Lehman; his wife Nancy; daughters, Beth Murphy and Lynn Mask; and their children, Joe Lamb and Jade Mask. Hugh celebrated life every day. He was blessed to have found Nancy after the death of his wife Kathryn. Nancy cared for him in their home until the end.
Carolyn Kiblinger Mandel, a 51-year resident of Port Washington, died after a long illness at her home in Baxter Estates on May 13, 2010 at the age of 72. She was born and raised on a farm in Flint, MI, one of four children of John and Carol Carey Kiblinger. She graduated from the University of Chicago in 1959, married fellow U of C alumnus Maurice Mandel, and settled immediately in Port Washington, where she taught English at Weber Junior High School for several years before raising a family.
Gregory Charles Ryan, born June 10, 1982 in New York City, died on April 28, 2010 after a courageous struggle to overcome medical complications. Until February 2009, Greg lived with his mother and step-father in Sands Point. For the past year, he was a resident of the Salmon House, an independent living house operated by Jawonio, a community resource for children and adults with disabilities and special needs. The house is located in New City, NY, in Rockland County.
Marie (Mary) Chester, age 96, of Port Washington, died on May 2, 2010. Marie was predeceased by her husband Michael Sr. and her grandson Kenneth. She is survived by her children, Michael Jr. (Rita), Carmine “Babe” (Anita), Angela McGrade (Frank) and Donald (Doris); her grandchildren, Christopher Chester (Darcy), Robert Chester (Jill), Michele Yung (Michael), Mary Beth Chester (Cheryl Ann Lassen), Renee Chester, Robin Chester (Robert), Kevin Chester (Joanna), Michael Chester, Danielle McGrade, and Brian McGrade (Jaime); and her great-grandchildren, Cassidy Beeman Schiandra (Joshua), Gabrielle Chester, Michella Chester, Nicolette Chester, Rachel Yung, Matthew Yung, Thomas Yung, Abigail Chester, Charlotte Chester and Peyton McGrade.
Richard Murphy, age 70, of Port Washington, died on May 1, 2010. Richard is survived by his wife Leona; his son Christopher (Rebecca); his granddaughter Giulietta Kathleen; his siblings, Kay Rogan (James), Michael (the late Kathy) and Daniel (Debra); his nieces and nephews, Caitlin Murphy, Kristen Murphy, James Rogan (Cathy), Cathy Warnke (Chris) and Maureen Mikus (Rod); and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Sean, Tara, Emily, CJ, Jared, and Alexandra. Funeral arrangements were handled by Austin F. Knowles, Inc. Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 6 at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. The interment followed at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
Our loving Joe was born June 18, 1918 and passed away April 30, 2010. Joe lived in Port Washington for almost 50 years. He moved his family there in 1955 and it was here that he raised his children, Patricia, Steven, Joan, Kathy and Diana. Initially, Joe had his business on Main Street and was an enthusiastic little league coach.
