Joan Hutchinson, the owner of 5J’s Jewelers, has been a fixture in town for over 35 years. Her specialty is everyday affordable jewelry, precious metals, precious and semi-precious gem stones, and children’s jewelry. Her store was first in the Soundview Shopping Center, back when there was a bowling alley there. She moved to a location on Main Street, and then to her current location further down on Main Street, in the Mini Mall. Yet, at the end of August, the oldest single-owner jewelry store in Port will be closing.
“My landlord told me that he is not renewing my lease because he wants to expand the gym next door. I decided not to start up all over again at a new location,” Hutchinson said. Instead, she will be building ahome-based web business, doing wholesale diamond repair and design. The business will still be called 5J’s Jewelers. Hutchinson will meet with clients privately instead of in a storefront.5J’s got its name from Joan, her husband John, and their 3 children, all of whose names begin with a J. “I added a cat named Jingles too,” Hutchinson said. Hutchinson got into the jewelry business when she was living in Oklahoma for a few months, where she became interested in turquoise and Indian jewelry. The rest is history.
Hutchinson speaks fondly of her many years in Port Washington. “I love this town. My kids graduated from Schreiber. So many people are coming to see me now,” she said wistfully. She will be liquidating her entire inventory this month. She is “literally giving things away.” In a farewell message to her friends and customers, Hutchinson stated, “I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to past and present customers for their support during the past 35 plus years.” Although nostalgic, Hutchinson is also looking ahead and getting excited about her new venture, and the time she will have to explore other things.
5J’s Jewelers is located at 29 Main Street. The telephone number is 944-6709.
