Most Port Washington residents often associate the first ice cream truck jingles of the summer with our favorite ice cream man, Melih Ozel, better known as Mel. While we’re all happy to see him in Port every summer, you probably don’t know all that much about Mel.
Mel has been serving Port Washington for 20 years. He began his career as an ice cream man as a way to earn some extra money while studying for a master’s degree in Computer Graphics from NYlT. Although continuing to sell ice cream was not his initial plan, the career stuck. In the future, Mel hopes to make use of his degree by upgrading his graphic skills, and to open an ice cream shop in town in order to continue serving the Port Washington community.
Mel can be seen most frequently in Manorhaven. He also tries to be present at major town events. While he is not allowed to sell there, the town dock is his favorite place in Port Washington. During the winter, Mel used to spend his time in Florida, but now remains in the New York area. He has delved into decorative painting, and even working as a security guard.
Mel’s connection to the community is undeniable. He loves Port Washington, and its residents. When asked about his relationship with the community, Mel replied, “we have so much trust and love in years to each other. Most of [the residents] are so loyal to me. Parents have so much confidence in me, and kids cheer every year when they see me for the first time at the beginning of the new season.” When asked about his favorite sweet treat, Mel replied, “Well it depends on my mood. I like lemon ice, and cookie sandwiches. I also enjoy Ben and Jerry’s, Haagen Dazs, watermelon bomb pops…oops I need to slow down!”
