HomeFreeHome Raises Money With Mother’s Day Garage Sale

On May 7 and May 8, HomeFreeHome held a garage sale that looked more like a party on the edge of Mill Pond. Cars were lined up along the sidewalk as avid pickers searched for their treasure among the donations of others. The garage sale had everything one might want, ranging from plaid and purple skirts to oversized rubber ducks. All the while, local children sold lemonade and small treats to support HomeFreeHome’s cause.

HomeFreeHome is a charity, started on Long Island in 2006, “dedicated to promoting architectural design solutions that enhance the independence and well-being of people with disabilities.” More information about the mission of this charity, like the quote above, can be found online at http://homefreehome.org/about/mission-and-history.

Creator, Laura Montlor, hopes that this charity will be active in all 50 states and is trying to get the word out. It is a volunteer organization that recruits architects and college students to design suitable architectural designs for the physically disabled. They hold an annual Mother’s Day garage sale that raises funds for the cause. This year, with the beautiful weather and the support of Port Washington residents, HomeFreeHome raised over $1,100. They had everything including but not limited to kitchen appliances, furniture, men’s jeans, books, coats, workout equipment, paintings, and even a shirt with a picture of a dinosaur that read, “Ultimate Party Animal.”

The event was their fourth annual fundraiser and was held on 11 Mill Pond Road in Port Washington. Donations are tax deductible, but the support you give is also just an excellent way to help out a community in need. Interested volunteers are urged to sign up.
