Town Passes New Law Allowing Group Sidewalk Sales

The North Hempstead Town Board passed legislation at their Dec. 8 meeting to allow group sidewalk sales to take place in the town. The law, written by Councilman Fred L. Pollack, establishes a permit procedure that allows sidewalk sales to be held by chambers of commerce, business improvement districts or a majority of merchants in a particular area, with certain safety guidelines to be followed.

Despite narrowly passing a 2.5 percent home energy tax earlier this year, the Nassau County legislature last week voted 13-5 in favor of repealing it. During a meeting Dec. 21, the 19-member legislature voted 13-5 in favor of eliminating the tax; Republican Nassau County Executive-elect Edward Mangano, who currently represents the 17th District, was not present for the meeting and therefore did not vote.

Manhasset, Albertson, and the Willistons Boost Mangano Win  

Four years ago, Thomas R. Suozzi was re-elected county executive by a comfortable 21-point margin over his Republican Party challenger, Gregory Peterson. With election results of the 2009 race now official, Edward I. Mangano, a Republican from Bethpage, is the new county executive. According to the Nassau County Board of Elections, the final total gave Mangano a 122,490 to 122,104 margin over Suozzi.
