Fall Migration Walk at Sands Point Preserve

It is the perfect time of year to search for falcons, warblers, osprey and other wildlife making their way to warmer settings for the winter in this Fall migration walk. The journey will seek out monarch butterflies and dragonflies, as well. This adventurous hike will move through woods and fields. Bring binoculars if you have them — and wear sneakers or sturdy footwear. Not recommended for toddlers and preschoolers. $10 per car or free with Annual Pass. Love, Lust & Crime: A Look at Relationships in Italian Cinema. 

Join Professor Valerie Franco for six programs in September and October. These comedies, dramas and thrillers cover such diverse topics as the exploitation of women, the destructive forces of the Mafia, and the way that love compels us to change our lives. With two decades of experience in film and television production in New York and Hollywood, Professor Franco lectures throughout the U.S. and Europe on cinema, women in film and literature, and Italian and Italian-American culture. Tonight’s film is Bitter Rice (1949-108 min.). Impoverished laborer Silvana (Silvana Mangano) turns down a chance to immigrate to South America in favor of an affair with Walter (Vittorio Gassman), the lover of her best friend. Defensive Driver Course

Registration begins September 17 for a class on Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. This 6-hour course is open to all ages. Those who take this course may be eligible for a 10 percent discount on vehicle liability, personal injury protection and collision insurance premiums for 3 years, and a reduction of 4 points from their driving record. A check for $28, made payable to Empire Safety Council, is due at registration. This course is available to Port Washington residents only. At the Port Washington Public Library.

Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society Fall Country Fair

In addition to the Civil War re-enactors, a petting zoo, wonderful music all day long, craftspeople, pony rides, a real working blacksmith and great food, this year the fair will have a real race car from the Vanderbilt Cup Races. The Alco Black Beast, winner of the 1909 and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Races, will be on display at the Fair. Sands-Willets House, 336 Port Washington Boulevard, just south of Uncle Guiseppe’s, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rain Date: September 22.
