Naomi Burke Bliznik, recently of Clarence, NY, passed away on March 7, 2009 at the age of 87. She was a longtime resident of Port Washington, moving there in 1955, to buy a home and raise her children. In December of 2005, she moved from Port to the Buffalo area to be close to her daughter and grandchildren.
Naomi grew up in Flushing. She was a registered nurse, graduating from St. John's Long Island City Hospital in September 1945. She loved nursing and worked in many of the area hospitals and nursing homes, including North Shore Hospital, St. Francis, the Sands Point Nursing Home and Little Neck Nursing Home, being employed into her 70s.
Through the years, Naomi was a devout Catholic and active in her church, Our Lady of Fatima. She was a volunteer for various charitable work well into her 70s, treasured her friends, far and near, and loved a good restaurant meal.
Above all, Naomi loved her family. Her husband John predeceased her as did her beloved son John Dennis. She is survived by her daughter Mary Ann Bliznik and her husband Chris Crowner, and grandchildren Nicolas and Simon, all of Clarence, NY; and her brother Raymond Burke and his children of Plainview.
A memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima on April 13 at noon.
Charlotte M. Kappenberg (nee Roehrig), age 82, a longtime resident of Sands Point, died on March 20, 2009. Charlotte is survived by her husband Donald H.; her children, Veronica E. Raible, Charlotte J. Raible (Wayne Weiss) and Susan M. Raible; her granddaughter Grace T. Weiss; and her sister Jane Diaks. She was an alumnus of Hunter College and completed graduate work at Columbia University. Charlotte was an active member of the American Association of University Women for over 50 years and generously contributed to charity through the Raible Foundation. Funeral arrangements were handled by Austin F. Knowles, Inc. Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 23 at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. The interment followed at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
