Emmy-Lu Chester Schwarz, 90, formerly of Port Washington, wife of the late Herbert Rees Schwarz, passed away on Feb. 26, 2009. Mrs. Schwarz was born in Somerville, NJ, daughter of the late Alan A. and A. Elizabeth Holmes Chester.
Many of her growing up years were in Cismont, VA, living on Music Hall Farm. She attended local schools there and went to the College of William and Mary where she studied art.
In 1953, Emmy-Lu and Rees moved to Port Washington to raise their three children. She volunteered for the Girl Scouts, UNICEF and Play Troop. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. In 1997, Mr. and Mrs. Schwarz moved to Charlottesville, VA, and subsequently to Mt. Pleasant, SC.
She is survived by a son Kenneth Holmes Schwarz of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Nancy Rees Schwarz of Port Washington and Elizabeth Terry Schwarz of Raleigh, NC; their spouses; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother Donal Gordon Chester of Maryville, TN. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Rees Schwarz; a brother John Alan Chester; and sister Mary Elizabeth Chester Owen.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Audubon Society, 225 Varick St., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10014 or to Friends of the Port Washington Library, One Library Dr., Port Washington, NY 11050.
Ida Marra, 84, of Port Washington, died on March 9, 2009. Ida was predeceased by her husband Alexander. She is survived by her children, Jean, Betty, Al and Maria; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated March 13 at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
