Manorhaven's Board of Trustees will be holding a forum sometime in January 2009, to discuss parking on village streets. This will be a public forum in which all residents, homeowners and renters are encouraged to attend. The purpose of this forum is to openly discuss with the public the parking issues that our village faces on a daily basis. Keeping in mind, that the current restrictions were instilled upon us for what were at that time, logical reasons. Maybe, in our present time these reasons are not so logical or maybe they still are?

In our village, we currently have "alternate side of the street parking" from 3 - 10 a.m. enforced from Dec. 1 through March 31 for the purposes of clearing the streets in the event of a snowfall for our residents and emergency (EMS, fire and police) vehicles and personnel. This leaves a 7 hour window for the road crew to plow all of our roads and that's if the snow stops falling by 3 a.m. This does not seem logical, when it could snow at anytime of the day or night and last for several hours at a time. Here's a thought, if the time restriction were from 8 to 4 p.m. leaving a 4 hour window from 4 to 8 p.m. (when no tickets will be issued) for the purpose of giving residents time to come home from work and park. This will give our road crew the necessary time needed to better clean our roads during a snow event.

Another parking restriction currently in effect is for an hour each day (alternate sides of the street) on Thursday and Friday from April 1 - Nov. 30 for the purpose of street sweeping our roads. This restriction used to be in effect all day on Thursday and Friday, but a few years ago it was made less restrictive to allow for more hours of on-street parking. According to our highway superintendent, this short time frame doesn't allow enough time to clean our roads because it didn't take into consideration equipment break down and repair times. This restriction also needs to be revised.

Please attend this meeting, as all new ideas will be entertained. Check the village board daily for this meeting's date, time and location. I will try and let you know as soon as it becomes available to me.
