The PWFD Drill Team competes at a recent fire racing tournament.

The Port Washington Fire Department closed out its summer with solid performances from its Drill Team and Softball Team. During the month of August, the softball team competed in the NY State Firemen's Championship Tournament in Hudson, NY. Port Washington's Bravest made it all the way to the finals before losing to state champion Pleasant Valley. Port won the state last in 2007 and took second in 2008. Veterans Mike Valente, Kenny DiLeo and Scott Wood were hitting machines as they have been for the last 20 years. Johnny Oldak, Billy Davis and CJ Gober, along with newcomers Alex Donatelli and Tom McDonough, round out the base of Port players who once placed the PWFD as one of the last teams standing. In 20 years of attending the state championship, Port has won eight times and finished second twice.

The Drill Team, "Road Runners," finished its summer in fashion with the Hempstead Labor Day Drill. Captain Dan Salerno, along with co-captains Donald Reese and Bones" Mahoney, helped develop the new additions to the team and make them competitive. As Port placed fifth in efficiency, veteran Salerno ran hydrant and Rob Lewis, along with the help of Mahoney, hit the target on first water. Kyle Lewis, Chris Cuomo, Pete Whitcomb and Albert Butler ran the remaining spots in coupling hoses together and dragging the hose down the race track. In the following event of motor pump, the positions reversed as Donald Reese and Rob Lewis hit the hydrant and Danny Salerno lit up the target. Labor Day marked the last tournament for Tom Rahilly. For 18 years, Tom has been a force on the course racing for the Oyster Bay Teddy's Boys and The Port Washington Road Runners. Not too many racing men last for 18 years and few still retire as one of the premium competitors at their position. Good luck and good job to Tommy for a job well done. Logo
