Planning for the Alan King Pro Am Tennis Tournament (l. to r.): Russell Heier, tennis pro at Wildwood; and Brenda Korff and Morris Levy co-hosts of the tournament.
Wildwood Pool and Tennis Club at 935 Middle Neck Road in Kings Point was selected to host The Alan King Pro Am Tennis Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 24, the day before the 2008 U.S. Open. All proceeds from the event will go toward finding a cure for cancer through the American Cancer Society and Hadassah's Moshe Sharett Institute of Oncology. The day's events will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue throughout the day until approximately 7:15 p.m. The semifinals will be played at 3 p.m., and the finals will begin at 5 p.m.
Alan King, famed comedian, beloved actor and passionate tennis player/fan, was a local resident and philanthropist of Great Neck, and recently died of cancer. In his honor and memory, a significant tennis event will be held at Wildwood, where top-ranked players are paired with local tennis enthusiasts in an all-day public charity tournament. Tennis Grand Slam players such as Guillermo Vilas, Peter Fleming, Brian Gottfried, Roy Emerson, The Jensen Brothers, Bob Lutz, Virginia Wade, and Mark Woodforde, will join 11 other tennis Hall of Famers to delight the hundreds of spectators, as they support this important cause.
This event is open to the entire community. There is a suggested donation of $5 to come down to Wildwood and watch the amazing pros delight us as they are teamed up with local amateurs. Not only will there be outstanding tennis being played, but there will be an opportunity to mingle with the pros, get autographs and take pictures with your favorite players.
There will be food available all day, provided by Bagel Hut. This event could not be possible without the generous support of our main sponsor, Gotham Bank. By supporting the Alan King Pro Am, you will help enable cutting-edge research to continue, in hopes of finding a cure for cancer one day soon, which will positively impact countless lives.
For any questions, please call hosts Brenda or Michael Korff or Morris S. Levy at 457-5645. In the event of rain, the tournament will be held at The Port Washington Tennis Academy.
