Port Washington's popular Organic Farmers' Market will begin its seventh season this Saturday, June 7, and will be open every Saturday morning through the end of October. The market, which has gained notoriety as the only 100 percent organic farmers' market in New York State, will offer fruits, vegetables and other delicious items from local organic farms and producers.
"The success of this special Farmers' Market and the support from the community has been wonderful," says market organizer Patti Wood, executive director of Grassroots Environmental Education, the non-profit organization based in Port Washington which sponsors the market. "As the issues of global warming and sustainability work their way down to the local level, and eating locally become a way of life in towns across the country, the farmers' market gives people the opportunity to walk the walk, not just talk the talk."
In addition to locally grown organic produce, the market offers organic breads and pastries, local honey, goat cheese, olive oils, farm-fresh eggs, hot organic coffee and fresh-baked muffins. (Savvy market patrons have been known to wait patiently in their cars for a new batch of freshly baked muffins to be delivered hot from the oven!) New to the market this year are prepared pestos, dips and salad dressings from Sang Lee Organic Farm of Peconic.
The market is located on the Town Dock and is open from 8 a.m. until noon. Shoppers are urged to come early and bring their own bags, as plastic bags will no longer be permitted at the market. Come early for the best selection!
