Recently HBO completed an excellent multi-part series on the life of John Adams, our second president; as expected the book (which the series was based on) is even better. One cannot study the early life of our country without appreciating how the giants who fought and founded our country were citizen politicians. Last weekend while in Manorhaven, it was refreshing to see a lifelong resident of our town, Michael Meehan, introducing himself to residents all the while explaining his desire to serve them as mayor of Manorhaven. Michael has lived in Port Washington/Manorhaven his entire life; he is the gentlemen who handles passports for the Port Washington post office.
Michael remembers what Port Washington was like before massive traffic and oppressive taxes. While speaking to residents, he patiently listens to suggestions and explains he wants to preserve what little green space remains in Manorhaven, fix the curbs, come up with some innovative ideas on how to help with the parking nightmare and finally begin the process of helping with overall congestion. Mainly he loves the village, has a perspective that comes with living in Manorhaven/Port for over 40 years and wants to return to the citizen politician model our founding fathers envisioned. Look for him on the street, go to the post office, ask him a question and let's put one of our own in a position to help us all.
