A severe traffic bottleneck exists in Port Washington where Main Street intersects with Shore Road. Leaving the Town Dock area and driving toward the business district, immediately before the traffic light, three parking spaces on the right side reduce traffic flow to one lane. Cars waiting to turn left onto Shore Road prevent others from going straight.
The answer: Eliminate the three parking spaces in front of two business stores and one empty store. The owner/occupants will object as causing business loss, which is questionable. But the good of the vast majority, those in cars often backed up to the Town Dock and wasting gallons of gasoline with air pollution, must take precedent over the few.
The Town of North Hempstead told me when I made the above complaint that it had purchased the property of the neighboring old boat store for additional parking before eliminating the three parking spaces. No demolition or activity has begun on the old boat site. The bottleneck will continue into the distant future. But these three parking spaces need to be eliminated. Now!
