This Friday, Jan. 25, the Lady Vikings basketball team will host the 15th annual PYA Night in the gym. It promises to be an exciting night of basketball. The Lady Vikings have an impressive 8-4 record this season and will look to avenge a 2 point loss to Mepham when they play Friday night at 7 p.m. When you see the team this season, check out the roster because there are nine new players on the team. That means nine first time varsity players! Don't be fooled by the youth of the team. Last Tuesday the team came back from a 7 point fourth quarter deficit to defeat highly ranked Freeport in overtime by a score of 56-54!
The team consists of eighth-graders Paige Kriftcher and Hayley Kerr, freshmen Samantha Milhaven and Alanna Bethon, sophomores Rachel Altman, Emma Horowitz, Rachel Strongin, Jillian Mezzetta and Katie Weil. The team has no juniors. The seniors are Christine Gerard, A.C. Constantine and "the captain" Jackie Mezzetta.
"Our team is just a pleasure to coach. They like each other, and are so willing to learn and keep getting better every day. It is so much fun to coach them," says Coach Stephanie "Jo" Joannon.
The girls are not only fun to watch, but also exciting. In addition to last week's heroics by Paige Kriftcher, who hit a 3 point shot with 9.4 seconds left in regulation to give Port its first lead of the game, and Jillian Mezzetta's 5 overtime points, Sam Milhaven set a LadyVikings rebound record with 25 in that game. Also, that night college scouts were in the stands to watch Jackie Mezzetta, as Jackie looks to pursue her dream of playing collegiate basketball next year. All through the season, the team has surprised many but not Coach Jo who notes, "When you have players who love to play and like each other, there are no surprises. It's all about wanting to be better."
On Friday the team is looking to pack the gym with families and fans of Lady Vikings basketball as they promote the young girls in town that play in the PYA programs. Any girl who wears her team shirt to the game will be eligible for giveaways at the game and will get a special Lady Vikings basketball memento. Come celebrate girls basketball at the Schreiber gym this Friday at 7 p.m.. See you there!
