For the past many months The Port News has run a weekly item indicating that the Visiting Nurses Association of Long Island is seeking volunteers for its "Meals on Wheels" program, an entity designed to supply meals of all types to folks who can't get around as much as they used to. We've lost one of our most dedicated volunteers, at least temporarily. Mrs. Alice O'Dowd had a fall recently and will be out of action for a while.
Alice, a senior citizen, has come to our house many times and she's one of the most high-spirited and pleasant persons we've met in a long, long time.
Alice is at St. Francis Hospital at present, but plans to get back in the swing as soon as possible.
In a phone conversation we asked Alice: "When you get well, do you begin making the rounds for the Visiting Nurses again?" Came the answer: "Yes, I plan to because I enjoy doing it and miss the many people I'm happy to assist."
Alice, you are a good person and I hope to see you again real soon.
