Mr. Michael Mandel's letter in the Nov. 29 issue of Port News, in which he supported giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, warrants some commentary. He shouldn't be disappointed at Governor Spitzer's sudden reversal on his position on this subject. It is no surprise whatsoever, because undoubtedly Hillary Clinton in an effort to defuse the damage which this subject has caused her campaign, exerted enough pressure on Governor Spitzer to reverse himself. Nothing unusual about this, because Hillary Clinton resorted to the same political arm twisting when she entered for the first time the senatorial race, by subjecting Westchester democrat Congresswoman Nina Loewy to withdraw from her senatorial candidacy, to make room for the Clinton political juggernaut! But more to the subject.
First and foremost let's stop using this PC fabricated term "undocumented!" These are illegal immigrants who violated and continue to violate with impunity the laws of this country. Pure and simple! Any one of us who commits an illegal act is subjected to consequences for such a commission. Not as a reward, which this misguided driver's license "gift" would be.
Secondly, Mr. Mandel suggests giving these illegal individuals a driving test. Since most of them don't speak English, how does he propose to compensate for this serious linguistic deficiency? By the way, not too long ago, there was a rash of bus accidents on the NJ Turnpike caused by foreign bus drivers who didn't understand the signs on the turnpike, which thank God, so far are still in English!
Mr. Mandel goes on to say that "with a driver's license (they) will be able to obtain state or national benefits that they otherwise are not entitled to receive." Wrong! Unfortunately these lawbreakers get a plethora of benefits, all at the hard working taxpayer's expense! As the cartoon Pogo said many years ago..."we met the enemy and he's us!"
Echoing Governor' Spitzer's rhetoric, which was void of substance then and is equally hollow in Mr. Mandel's letter, how will my insurance cost go down, when a group of inexperienced drivers go to the "unassigned insurance" pool? Guess whose insurance rates will increase, not decrease, to insure these drivers? Us, "John Q public!"
The statement that denying this reward is "politically expedient," is really begging the issue. On the contrary, promoting and advocating this warped program, that Mr. Mandel, is "politically expedient" because, it potentially generates an entire class of voters, and guess for which party?
Finally, may I suggest that Mr. Mandel and others who misguidedly were taken in by this totally flawed and irresponsible program, read and take to heart the following statement Theodore Roosevelt made in 1907. How prophetic and timely!
Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on immigrants and being an American in 1907.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but a sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907
I rest my case!"
