Port Youth Activities, Inc. (PYA) recently announced that long-time board member Stephen Sholder has been installed as vice-president for a two-year term. He joins President Bill Omeltchenko, Treasurer Joseph Gil and Secretary Greg Pond who will each serve additional terms as PYA's executive officers.
Sholder has been a PYA board member for 21 years and has helped shape the organization's growth from a fledgling organization to what exists today. Sholder plays a prominent role as a member of PYA's Field Committee, which oversees all field operations at Lion's Field. He is also a member of the golf committee and the annual dinner dance committee, two of PYA's most important fundraising events. Outside of PYA, Sholder is the owner of a local sprinkler company, Sprink-O-Matic. Sholder also is an adjunct professor in environmental studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Sholder previously spent 20 years' active duty in the U.S. Air Force and served an additional 10 years as an active duty member of the Air National Guard following his retirement from the Air Force. He is also president of the Willowdale Terrace Civic Association. Sholder has lived in Port for 32 years, and is married to Ing-Britt. Their son Karl is a music teacher and is in his last year of graduate school.
Sholder replaces Phil Rybecky who will remain a member of the PYA board and continue his important roles as co-commissioner of PYA's sixth/seventh-grade boys basketball program and co-coordinator of PYA's Major League Baseball. President Omeltchenko thanked Rybecky for his leadership: "Through the years, Phil has been an important contributor to PYA's growth and development. As vice president these past two years, he helped guide PYA through a vital period in the organization's history, particularly the explosive growth of our programs. We applaud Phil's dedication to PYA and are delighted to welcome Steve in his new role."
