On Wednesday, Nov. 7, the high school varsity tennis team beat Westhampton High School 5-2, capturing the Long Island tennis championship. This is only the second year of this competition.
After winning the Nassau County championship on Oct. 23, the team continued its quest to become the best tennis team on all of Long Island.
Westhampton Beach High School entered the contest as the undefeated champion of Suffolk County. According to coach Stan Makover, they were a powerful team and had attained the Suffolk championship with a record of 18-0. Makover stated, "I knew they would be a formidable opponent, but I had confidence that our team would continue this dream season and win it all."
The team garnered many individual honors as well as the prestigious Long Island championship. The following awards were presented to the girls at the team banquet held at the Port Washington Yacht Club on Nov. 15:
• Most Valuable Player - Kristin Norton (undefeated, 17-0)
• Most Improved Player - Alexa Froccaro and Jackie Froccaro (ninth-graders who went from the eighth-grade team to starting positions on Varsity)
• Coach's Award - Sidny Ginsberg and Julia Catalano (senior captains and four year Varsity members)
• All Conference - Kristin Norton and Jess Podlofsky (this honor is voted on by conference coaches)
• All Division - Kristin Norton, Alexa Froccaro, Jackie Froccaro, Stephanie Weinberg, Jess Florin, Julia Catalano (this honor is given to those who win 10 league matches)
The other major contributors to winning this championship were Emily Szulman, who won her third singles match, and Adrienne Bourguet/Jen Fridman, who won the first doubles match.
The starters were supported at the contest by their teammates Julie Suzzan, Katie Stack, Alex Bellini, Margaret Bellon, Alex Vodjany, Olivia Pitrantonio, Twinkle Contractor and Sara Scheinman.
