Suzanne Marie Kent passed away on Aug. 24, 2007 after a long battle with lung cancer. Mrs. Kent was born the youngest of five on June 24, 1929 in Java, then the Dutch East Indies. Her father was a British rubber plantation owner, who, as part of British Military Intelligence, spied on the military troop movements in Southeast Asia. Her mother, Eleanor Jessica, in addition to raising the children, ran a medical clinic for the local Javanese community until she succumbed to malaria.
During WWII, she moved with her sister and brothers back to London where she was in school during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. Her life-long claustrophobia she attributed to being buried in rubble for hours after a Nazi bomb destroyed her school. After the war, she became a midwife and a registered nurse. She eventually came to the United States via Canada where she married and had two children.
She raised her children while working 12 to14 hour days as an ICU, and a recovery room, nurse at St Francis Hospital. She retired in 1996 after 26 years of service and moved to Ponte Vedra, FL, where she volunteered with a local homeless shelter and helped to develop its medical clinic. She moved to Lincoln, NE, in 2002, where she continued to be a devoted mother, and became a loving grandmother.
She is survived by her son Christopher Sutton and daughter-in-law Connie Kent of Lincoln, NE; daughter Melanie Suzanne and son-in-law David Greenewalt of East Dummerston, VT; sister Anne Sutton of Erie, PA; brother Tony Sutton of Toronto, Canada; grandchildren Mary Elizabeth, Campbell, Suzanne and Evelyn Sutton of Lincoln, NE; Isabelle Kent of East Dummerston, VT; as well as innumerable friends and extended family.
A memorial service was planned for Aug. 28 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Tabitha Hospice or donor's choice. Condolences: www.aspenaftercare.com; Aspen Cremation and Burial Service, Lincoln, NE.
