Although I wasn't going to answer Mr. Roy Coniglio's letter which appeared in the Aug. 9 edition of Port News, the absurdity of its contents demand an answer. To illustrate. Mr. Coniglio, in trumpeting his pedigree academic accomplishments suggests that if the windows rattle from helicopter flights..."have your windows repaired, the problem is there, not in the air." What an absurd statement and that from an individual who holds so many degrees? Although I don't have three engineering degrees, as Mr. Coniglio informs the readers, I only have one in mechanical engineering and an MBA, I suggest that Mr. Coniglio take a basic remedial physics course and concentrate on the ripple effect of sound waves.
In his other absurd statement, Mr. Conigilo states that "helicopters are the safest of all aircraft." That Mr. Coniglio is "passing judgment about air traffic safety," which with all due respect to your many degrees doesn't qualify you to so mislead the readers. Try to tell how safe these whirlybirds are to the families of the four newsmen who died on July 27 this year, in a helicopter crash in Phoenix, AZ. Try to convince your intransigent posture to the family of the East Rockaway man who died in a helicopter crash, as reported in Newsday, March 10, 2007. Try to convince the Kings Park High School administration and parents how safe your helicopters are, when one of them crashed in the high school's soccer field, injuring the pilot and his passenger, as reported in Newsday May 13, 2006. And how about the helicopter crash in the East River as reported in the July 8, 2007 'Metro Section' of The New York Times, with the headline..'Copter Crashes in River, but Injuries are Minor.' Fox News (but of course due your political leanings, that's probably not a channel you watch), reported on July 29 this year two separate helicopter crashes in Mississippi.
Unlike you Mr. Coniglio, I count myself privileged to be in the company of Dr. Geoffrey Gordon, the East End community and legislators, the mayors of Kings Point and Saddle Rock and Councilman Fred Pollack, among others whose voices are yet to be heard, who have expressed their concern about the noise pollution and yes, the safety of helicopter flights over our communities. So, Mr. Coniglio, continue having pleasant dreams, since you don't hear them, lest you sleep with ear plugs!
