The front lawn just south of King Kullen on Shore Road looks more like a wild meadow recently, but the Village of Port Washington North Mayor Bob Weitzner is in negotiations to purchase the land and restore it as a lawn for the public. Part of the plan is also to purchase the smaller building for a town hall and indoor pool. Three outdoor tennis courts are also included.
Weitzner has been negotiating with two separate businesses in order to acquire the properties, and then to finance the deal he will sell to a residential developer the 7-acre parcel adjacent to Mill Pond Acres that the village owns. Damast, the new owner of the 10-acre property with two buildings, will be using the larger building for their two companies, Finance Novelty Corp., which manufactures hair barrettes and similar products, and Ambiance, which designs and supplies china to major retailers like Fortunoff and Macy's. Publishers Clearing House owns 5 acres adjacent to this property that Weitzner hopes to purchase also. On the waterfront Weitzner plans a fishing pier and boat dock with parking available on the newly purchased land.
No tax dollars will be necessary said Weitzner. "That's a phenomenal opportunity for the community," he added. The Village of Port Washington North consists of 3,100 residents and 1,300 housing units. The 7-acre parcel to be sold could include 45 additional units. Originally, Weitzner hoped to purchase the entire 10-acre property but the housing price downturn lowered the price of the 7-acre parcel the village was selling.
