I and my family are residents of Port Washington for 20 years and we feel that this hotel is not a well thought out use of this property. Though I am not against the idea of a small hotel on our peninsula, I feel the Main Street location is not the proper place for it. I currently teach at the Alternative School located on this part of Main Street and witness firsthand the traffic backed up all the way to Shore Road on a daily basis. Any use of this space will be additional burden on the traffic but a hotel/conference center with valet parking is more than the area can handle.
Valet parking off-site for conferences means two ingress and two egress per vehicle. This will make a bad traffic problem even worse. Additionally, support functions of deliveries and personnel add another negative dimension to this traffic mess. Homes just behind this site on Covert St. will be the most negatively affected in the area. This hotel is literally in their backyard.
What about the Thompson Industries site for a hotel. That would be an ideal location.
Our town needs additional businesses to boost the tax base, but careful consideration has to be given to these kinds of negative situations. I do believe that people appreciate progress and I am confident that our legislators will not let their constituency down by allowing this.
