Under the direction of the physical education coordinator of the Port Washington Schools, Marie Giamonco, and with the assistance of the Schreiber High School Letter Club students, the North Shore NY lodge sponsored the Elks "Hoop Shoot" at Weber Middle School on Jan. 6, 2007. Three boys and three girls, ages 8-13, won the first round of competition and have been named the lodge champions.

First place trophies were awarded to one boy and one girl in each of three categories: ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Runner-up trophies were also awarded.
The six champions now advance to the district finals at New Hyde Park High School on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007 at 2 p.m., where they will compete with other lodge winners throughout the area.
The Elks "Hoop Shoot," began as a local program by Corvallis, Oregon Elks in 1946, is in its 36th year of national competition. Over three million boys and girls are expected to participate this year.
