  • News: Craig Johnson to Run for Balboni's State Senate Seat

    Nassau County Legislator Craig Johnson has been unanimously selected as the Democratic candidate for the 7th District State Senate Special Election called for Tuesday, Feb. 6. Members of the selection committee and Nassau Democratic Party joined Johnson to celebrate his selection when he announced his candidacy last week. FULL STORY

  • News: Local Volunteer Group to Plan for and Help Operate Sands Point Preserve

    Three-and-a-half years of diligent work have finally paid off for the Port Washington residents who, at the request of County Supervisor Thomas Suozzi, organized and founded the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve (Friends) because of concerns that the county was not able to properly maintain the property and a desire to save it before it was too late. Last October the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved a comprehensive, 17-page agreement that gives the Friends the mandate to initiate all plans and to be the operating entity for the preserve. Since then details have had to be ironed out, but the agreement is now ready for enactment. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Champions Crowned in Elks 'Hoop Shoot'

    Under the direction of the physical education coordinator of the Port Washington Schools, Marie Giamonco, and with the assistance of the Schreiber High School Letter Club students, the North Shore NY lodge sponsored the Elks "Hoop Shoot" at Weber Middle School on Jan. 6, 2007. Three boys and three girls, ages 8-13, won the first round of competition and have been named the lodge champions. FULL STORY

  • Sports: MBYC 76th Annual Frostbite New Year's Regatta

    There is no better example of sailing as a family sport than winter frostbiting. Possibly because of the nature of a small boat, a skipper looks for a rather lightweight crew to meet the boat's class weight requirement. But many of us who are committed to winter sailing think it is the sport itself, not the boat, that is the motivation for families to sail together. There are many examples of father-and-son teams that sail together even when the son is in his teens and almost full-grown. And then there are the husband-wife teams that are out sailing in the winter together, year after year, and enjoying the time together. So it is not necessarily the boat that promotes family togetherness, but the fun of sharing a wintertime experience with a family member that draws skipper and crew together. FULL STORY
