On a late summer day in mid-August, the Port Washington Legends 10 year old baseball travel team clinched the Glen Cove Mayor's Trophy championship by defeating a tough Glen Cove team in the championship game.
This tournament in Glen Cove brings the best tournament travel teams from across Long Island into the area. The Port Legends had to play nine games in a tough division comprised of nine other teams. They won every game and went on to become the top seed in the final round and win the entire tournament.
Sponsored by the Port Washington Youth Association (PYA), this team is comprised of the best local ball players. The "Legends" also represented Port Washington earlier in the season in the Williamsport Little League World Series tournament and made it to the final game in their district, a great achievement for this young and newly formed team.
Team Manager, Joe Duarte, said "this is the finest group of boys I have ever had the privilege to coach, their desire to compete and attitude towards each other, opponents, parents and officials exemplifies sportsmanship at its highest level". The Legends' motto is "Heroes fade away, but Legends never die" which seems fitting for a team that posted an impressive 16-3 regular season record. Congratulations to PYA and the Legends on their outstanding season!
