Sally Redfield Wood

Sally Redfield Wood, 81 years old, a Port Washington resident for 74 years, died on Feb. 11, 2006. Mrs. Wood was born in Hartford, CT. She graduated from Edgewood Park College for Women and Schreiber High School. She was the beloved wife of Gardner Wood for 52 years who predeceased her in 1997. Survivors include her son, Gary Gardner Wood of Richmond, VA, and his children, Charles Van Schoonhoven Wood, James Gardner Wood and Bayley Redfield Wood; and her daughter, Susan Redfield Wood and her children, Peter Redfield Toh and Christine Wood Toh.
Sally was a devoted wife and mother with a fun loving, sweet personality and a wonderful gaiety. She was a very loyal friend, adoring her domestic pets, teaching young children, painting unique pictures and sewing with her Quaker sewing group. Her children will cherish the especially kind and secure upbringing of their parents. Sally was a comforting steady presence with a generous, gentle and beautiful soul.
A memorial service will be held at the Friends Meeting in Manhasset on July 29 at 10 a.m. There will be a reception after the service.
Catherine Reese (nee Bieler), 91, a sixth generation resident of Port Washington, died on July 6, 2006. She was a descendant of the Hyde and Mackey families. Her father, Edward J. Bieler Jr., was an architect involved in the development of the sand mining industry in Port Washington. He was a former PW Police Commissioner in the 1930s and 1940s. Catherine loved Manhasset Bay and fishing in its waters. She is survived by her son Robert (Beverly); her grandsons, Robert E. (Kelly), Roger W., Raymond J. and Donald F; and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home. Religious service held at the funeral home. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
