The Port Washington Public Library has earned a national reputation for the services it provides, not only to the immediate community, but also the broader region in which it resides. This is a direct result of the hard work of its dedicated employees. The members of the staff are the people who make the library come alive as a true community center of lifelong learning, bringing pleasure, knowledge and fulfillment to its patrons. Recently, the Staff Association supported the library by taking out two full-page advertisements in the Port Washington News in support of the library budget. This community responded passing that budget by a 2-to-1 margin.

However, the employees of the library are currently without a contract since the previous agreement terminated on June 30, 2006. While that contract ended recently, we have been attempting to negotiate with the board since October of last year. Our efforts have been met with an unwillingness to engage in sincere and meaningful negotiations as required by law. Frustrated by the board's failure to negotiate with us, we, in compliance with the Taylor Law, requested mediation. Unfortunately, our first meeting with the mediator and the board's representative proved fruitless.

Therefore, the employees of the Port Washington Public Library are now asking the board to support the staff by engaging in good faith negotiations with the Staff Association in order to achieve a fair and equitable contract.
