At 98 years of age and after a brief illness, Antoinette C. Vetrone, "Ann," passed away on March 20, 2006. Ann was born in Benevento, Italy on Oct. 18, 1907. In 1925, she married Anthony Vetrone and together they moved to the United States. The family lived in Port Washington for over 70 years and it was there that she passed away on the first day of spring. At the time of her death, she was surrounded by family and her marvelous caretaker, Marva. She was predeceased by her husband in 1952.

Antoinette "Ann" Vetrone

Ann's life was dedicated to serving others. She was known for her compassion and consideration of those in need. Her charitable works included delivering Meals on Wheels through St. Francis Hospital, visiting with the elderly and infirm and preparing and serving meals at the I.N.N. (Interfaith Nutritional Network) in Glen Cove. She was very active at St. Peter of Alcantara Church, serving on many committees throughout the years, mending sacred linens, arranging altar flowers, serving as Eucharistic Minister and praying everyday for peace in the world. Ann continued to donate her time to these causes well into her 90s! In addition to being an expert Italian cook and seamstress, she loved opera and listened faithfully to the Metropolitan Opera radio program every Saturday afternoon. Ann especially loved her grandchildren and was always ready to listen or come to their aid in times of need. She was the quintessential "nonna" her kitchen, there was always a pot of marinara sauce simmering on the stove and cookies baking in the oven. She tended her roses and garden lovingly, pointing out that the beautiful magnolia tree in her backyard had been planted by her husband 70 years ago!

She is survived by her son, Dr. Cosmo Vetrone (wife, Karen) and her daughter, Patricia Vetrone Slater of East Northport, NY. Her grandchildren include, Lee Anne Vetrone-Timothy of Port Washington, (husband, Matt and their children Sam, Jake, and Anabel), Holly Vetrone Gober (also of Port Washington, (husband CJ and son Cal.), Robert Vetrone of Half Moon Bay, CA (wife, Gabrielle and daughters, Ella and Josephine) and Judd Vetrone of San Francisco, CA, Mary Jane Slater of East Northport, NY and Sandra Slater Dale of Huntington Bay, NY (husband Robert, sons Steven, Bobby, William and daughter, Malese). In addition, Ann leaves behind family in Italy, including her 103-year old sister!

Ann will be missed by her family and the many, many people she touched near and far throughout her life. A funeral Mass celebrating Ann's life was held at St. Peter of Alcantara Church on March 24, internment followed at Holy Rood Cemetery. Donations in her name may be made to the St. Stephen's Senior Center, St. Stephen's Church, 9 Carlton Ave., Port Washington, NY 11050. Logo
