It was just like the Olympics for those in the world of high school winter track. Those athletes who placed in the Conference finals then went on to compete at "The Long Island Individual Championships" which were held on Feb. 2 at Suffolk Community College.
Caitlin Fitzpatrick placed first in the shot put at the Conference finals, earning a place in the county competition. At the county event, she placed second in a field of 10 finalists, with a throw of 31 feet 7 3/4 inches, her personal record. She earns All-County honors with this accomplishment. The first- and second-place finishers in each event qualify to compete in the state championships. Interestingly, Caitlin initially came out for winter track three years ago to improve her conditioning for spring lacrosse and found she had a talent for the shot put. Caitlin is a three-sport athlete at Schreiber - soccer, winter track and field and lacrosse.
Arnold Donado, who also competes in the shot put had a fourth-place finish with a throw of 46 feet at the Individual Championships. Arnold said, "Even though I did not qualify to go to the States, I am very proud of myself a this is my best record. It's a very demanding sport."
