Our school children deserve all the academic help they can get. One of the activities eliminated this year with the budget defeat was the after-school homework club in the elementary schools.

Because we are professionals who care about children, we - the Retired Educators of the Port Washington Teachers Association - have agreed to volunteer to help students in a one-day-a-week Education Support Center. This will be run as a pilot program in concert with the library.

Although it is neither our function nor desire to replace after-school activities previously funded by the district, we are volunteering to help our youngsters.

We remain concerned that the in-service teachers have no contract as of this late date and hope that every effort will go into negotiating a fair contract very soon and to passing our next school budget.
